What a treasure you are. Thank you! When you all read this, remember that Lissa and her partner Jeff picked me up at the VA, took me home, and made me Gomae, a Japanese Spinach Iron bomb that is so delicious. I have my healing journey launched by loving friends, and I am trying my way to return the favor by sharing food, love, and this blog with all of you as a pay it forward. Tante' Grazia!

Dear Chef, I had my kidney removed on 3/3...and it is a very rare and aggressive Papillary RCC with Sarcoma Features and Necrosis. I have been eating a plant based, whole foods diet exclusively for the 15 months prior to this diagnosis in February. I had no extra weight on me but lost 9 pounds in December and 10 pounds in January--signs in hind sight that something was wrong, but not anything I was concerned with because i was doing a lot of juicing an cleansing, and figured my body was going to balance itself out. I enjoyed vibrant health throughout 2024. I added more grains and soy proteins in January and still lost weight, and then lost my appetite in February. It was not until I was peeing Merlot on 2/11 that I called a doctor. At any rate, I am in the throes of the dance with cancer, and only two weeks, two days post surgery. I am healing well incision wise, but have no appetite, eating for nourishment waiting for bone scan and follow up with Oncology. My whole being vibrates with love and I've been educating myself about protecting my dear remaining kidney and the cancer-fighting foods. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your Intentional Table and this article. Yes, I am interested in your book! Yes, I too know that I am so much more than this beautiful temple that gives my soul expression, and I have so much more I want to experience and create. One of which is to sit at your table! Thank you for this post, and helping to navigate some of the information that I am trying to sort through. Much love!

Grateful you are still here and healthy, my friend!

I saw the power of food as medicine first hand myself when my old dog Finnegan got sick and massive tumors were found with a very poor prognosis. I started making him homemade food, initially just because soup is comfort, right? And, I didn't know what else to do for my dying dog~ But, he perked up and started playing again and going for walks and barking at squirrels, so I kept making his food and he lived and enjoyed almost 3 more years.

Anyhoo, I love that you are writing and sharing your journey, and look forward to reading it. Also, I miss your cooking~ hope to share a meal again sometime soon!

Thank you for writing this informative piece! It’s good to know you are thriving. Would you like to teach a Food as Medicine cooking class in Tinamastes? I know there are people hungry for this type of class.

Hi there, it's good to hear from you. I am still in California, but I am getting finished up. I would love to, and of course, the local adaptations would be nothing less than a miracle to be able to showcase.

I look forward to seeing you at the Ferria soon!

Jonathan, I remember you diligently figuring out food as medicine when first healing another, and then yourself. How wonderful that you, the "invincible", have now written a book to guide the rest of us! I would love to read your draft. Thank you.

Great content Jonathan. Amazing what the universe gives us and how we respond. We may not have conscious choices on what shows up - though we can choose how WE show up to it. You are talking my language here - love it - and love you!!

Thank you, Uma! It's been a while. We had many chances to share food, great times, good wine, and, of course, the mountains of Mendocino. Miss you much and hope to make up a trash can of salad with you again before it's all over! (You know!)

Dear Man,

So grateful for you still being here in the body that is not you!

My octogenarian minister/soul-mate transitioned from an aggressive renal cancer a few years ago and I know a few others with this as well. There seems to be an increase in this 'pissed off' diagnosis, so adding attitudinal changes is pertinent I feel.

Brazil nuts are the highest in Selenium and a secret weapon that allopathic practitioners mostly seem to willfully ignore.

Continued healing blessings be yours.

If I said I just want a burger would you really 'personally come and smack' me? LOL, I really just want an in person hug! I would love a copy of Thrive please!

No, my mom never smacked me either; it was a deterrent but not really a good one because she always had a smirk when she would say it. Barking, not biting. Ah, country life. I am aware of the Brazil nut item as well! I went with nuts and seeds generally, but walnuts and Brazil nuts are the champs.

Yes, aggressive was the word. I think they used it on me to impress me with the fact that it was urgent. It worked. Kidney Cancer is right up there with Prostate for men, and it takes a lot of us out each year.

I will buy you a burger when I see you. :)

Thank you for this beautiful and important post. When you guys were in Kentucky, there was a discussion about food combinations. Can you please remind me what two should never be eaten together? Would love the draft.

Yes! The basics are: No Protein and Starch at the same time. (Think Burger—my kryptonite.) But YES to Protein and Vegetables. Vegetables with Starch are OK, but forget the Protein. It's about digestive enzymes in competition. These create acid, and it makes a huge difference. Draft will be sent!

somehow i missed this column of yours in the crazy quilt of life that goes on around here. the information you provide is invaluable for anyone wanting to eat more healthily but especially those who are experiencing illness on any level. as a cancer survivor mySelf, i salute your willingness to turn your experience of illnrss & treatment into a primer for others. with so many things being turned on their heads lately, the simplicity of knowing which foods have the nutrients most needed at a given time will become essential. there is a reason why children who grow up on farms tend to be so healthy! and why natural medicine and nutrition have become increasingly turned to in the last few decades. perhaps i am too later to request the draft, but if it is still available, i would love to read it! (and if not, i know you will let us know when it comes out to the public). wishing you the best to come!
